Do you know that the brain is built in the first 25 years of life?

Dr. Patricia Tibbs June 9, 2023

It is the control centre. The development of the brain is actually quite miraculous. The most rapid development of the brain occurs in the first three years of life and during adolescence. This is the teenage years.

Toxic stress in a child’s life, especially during those times, actually alters the function of the brain. If, in addition to the stress, the child does not have a trusted adult in their life, at least one, the damage could be irreversible. Children who do not have a trusted adult in the life, often end up the adult who is constantly scanning the environment for danger and also, who forms very poor attachments

What are the ways that you can show love to a child? In his excellent book, ‘Building resilience in children and teens’, Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, lists several ways that you can do this.

  •  You tell them.
  • You see the best in them.
  • You protect them. They need to have boundaries around morality and safety. Keep them safe.

The aces questionnaire is a tool that is used to see whether an individual child or adult may be more, or less sensitive to adversity. It is a good tool however, it does not mention protective aspects of the child’s life like good relationships with at least one adult, skill building opportunities, and community services that are available to them.
